Mt. Baker Backcountry Avalanche Awareness

Conclusion

Mt. Bakers backcountry is inherently dangerous and has become increasing popular in the last several years. The purpose of this project was designed at creating a greater public awareness to the high risk avalanche areas within the Shuksan Arm and Table Mountain backcountry areas. By collaborating with local avalanche experts a synthesis of knowledge was created. From their input graphical visualizations of frequent avalanche paths were established and mapped. Known and probable trigger points were included and symbolized in addition to the avalanche probabilities during each storm cycle. By creating a final web page the user can access several high resolution photos and can navigate through the avalanche terrain while seeing probabilities of avalanches occurring during each storm cycle.
Click on map to navigate to each backcountry study area.

The study areas that we have focused on can, and do, see avalanches well out side of our projected paths. This project is only an avalanche awareness site, not a site that tries to project actually avalanche paths.
